Coleman Barks, Interpreter of Sufi Poet Rumi, Is Coming (Back) To Chattanooga

Coleman Barksis a poet, but he is best known both in the English-speaking world and the Middle East for his “translations” of the poetry written by the 12th century Persian poet, Rumi. Barks does not speak or read Persian so his work is not a literal translation, but rather a poetic re-working of literal translations by Islamic scholars.

Coleman Barks is coming back to his native Chattanooga this Friday, April 10th for a fundraiser for The Center for Mindful Living here in Chattanooga called An Evening with Rumi. When he spoke to Richard Winham he told him his study of Rumi’s poetry has consumed much of his time for almost half his life.

Richard Winham joined WUTC five years after the station began broadcasting to the Chattanooga area and the Tennessee Valley.
