Celie (L-Shante’ Faunteroy) & Nettie (Mary Edwards) in The Color Purple presented by Ensemble Theater of Chattanooga .

The Broadway musical adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize winning novel The Color Purple by Alice Walker features an all African-American cast telling the story of Celie as she learns to love herself and change her life in the early years of the 20th century rural south.  The stage at ETC's Eastgate Town Center is challenging but seems much more spacious than it is as the cast sings, dances and struts on and off center stage.  From a rural Southern farm to the fields of Africa, the cast and crew of ETC brings the audience through a heartfelt and sometimes jarring story of the harsh realities facing women of color in rural Georgia and their low position in American culture of the 1930's.
