Historian Mark Waters Uncovers Stolen Gold from the Civil War

From a media release:

In 1865, the equivalent of 3.6 Million dollars of Civil War Confederate gold was stolen and is, to this day, unaccounted for. Join historian, author, and speaker Mark Waters as he shares this fascinating story of mystery and missing gold at the Museum Center at 5ive Points on Thursday, April 24, 2014 at 6pm. This event is free for Museum members and regular admission applies for non-members.

The “Confederate Treasury” (initially $10.5M in today’s value) plus the Richmond, VA, bank assets ($9M in today’s value) were stored in Washington, GA. On a transport trip to Richmond, a portion of the assets was stolen.  This robbery occurred on May 24, 1865 and is known as the “Midnight Raid at Chennault, GA.”

Waters has conducted extensive research into this event and others related to the Civil War in the south. According to Waters, a portion of the midnight raiders were ex-Confederate soldiers from East Tennessee – an area that was primarily pro-Union.

The Museum Center at 5ive Points tells the story of the Ocoee region through compelling exhibitions and dynamic educational programming that promotes history, culture, and preservation.
