The Impressions Are Still Singing, Still Recording in their 80's

Youtube

When Chattanooga natives Fred Cash and Sam Gooden were still just teenagers they joined Curtis Mayfield to form The Impressions. The Impressions went on to become one of the most successful groups of the era. Between 1958 and 1975 they had a string of Top Ten hits including “I’m So Proud”, “Gypsy Woman” and “Amen.”

Now in their 80’s, Fred Cash and Sam Gooden are still recording and performing, and recently they were interviewed by Joanna Richardson, a historian from Chicago. Ms. Richardson is compiling interviews with 2600 people considered significant figures in the Black community throughout the 20th century for the HistoryMakers project. That project is the nation's largest African American video oral history archive, and the Library of Congress is hosting the repository of interviews.

In this WUTC segment, Richard Winham, together with Doug Cook, host of WUTC’s Sunday evening soul show, talked to Fred Cash and Sam Gooden who shared many entertaining stories about growing up in Chattanooga and later touring the world as The Impressions.
