Behold, Bones Made From Beer Bran

Barley Bones, a Chattanooga company, crafts dog treats from the spent barley waste of local beer breweries.

Ben Whitelaw was a brewer at Big River, the brew pub in downtown Chattanooga, when he first conceived a business making and selling dog treats. He was in the habit of taking his dog to work with him on the weekends. As soon as they got there the little dog made a beeline for the spent grain scattered all over the floor of the grain room. Other dogs are equally attracted to the grain left over during the process of brewing beer.

Tennessee Tails: Pets and Their People, by Dr. Kathryn Primm

Dr. Kathryn Primm, a veterinarian who owns Applebrook Animal Hospital in Ooltewah, has written a memoir.  It's a collection of short, true stories about her four-legged patients and the people who love them.  Tennessee Tails: Pets and Their People is available from Amazon.  Proceeds from the book's first year of sales will benefit the Chattanooga Humane Society and the Pet Placement Center.

Chattanooga Artists Create Animal Art, Pet Portraits for Reflections Gallery

  Opening September 12th and showing through October 24th, the new Reflections Gallery exhibit features farm animals, wild animals and household animals.  Patrons can even commission portraits of their cats, dogs and other pets.  Reflections Gallery is located at 6922 Lee Highway.

McKamey's 'Yappy Meower' Series Benefits Homeless Cats and Pups

Beavis Cuddlesworth is one of thousands of kittens adopted from McKamey.

McKamey Animal Center on North Access Road gives medical care and shelter to animals without homes.  Executive Director Karen Walsh talks about a new, recurring fundraiser series called "Yappy Meower."  Future dates and locations include Sticky Fingers on March 19, Mia Cucina on April 6th and The Blue Plate on May 1st.  Mary Helen Miller visited McKamey to find out more about the services -- some of them quite quirky -- that McKamey offers  its animals.
