UTC presents the Dave Walters Jazz Quartet on 3/3

From a media release:

The Music Department is pleased to present UTC piano instructor David Walters and the Dave Walters Jazz Quartet. Joining Mr. Walters are guest artists, and veterans of the Chattanooga Jazz scene Jeff McIntosh on woodwinds, Tom McLaren, bassist, and Mike Salter on drums. The performance will take place in the Roland Hayes Concert Hall, at UTC’s Fine Arts Center, 752 Vine St., Chattanooga, March 3rd, 2014 at 7:30 PM. Admission is free and open to the public.

The program will feature a variety of musical styles, which will include swinging up-tempo standards, lilting jazz waltzes, dance-like compositions with an infectious Latin beat, and classic lyrical ballads. Works will range anywhere from the elegance and lyricism of Duke Ellington’s compositions to the quirky dissonances and rhythmic thrusts in the music of Thelonious Monk. Also featured, are the sophisticated sounds of Dave Brubeck’s compositions, and the poignancy in the songs of Brazilian composer Antonio-Carlos Jobim.

David Walters currently serves on the piano faculties of UTC and the Cadek Conservatory of Music, where he teaches classical and jazz piano. A highly versatile performer, he is as recognized in the field of jazz as he is for his extensive work in classical music. Mr Walters has performed at several universities throughout the region, and his résumé includes many chamber music concerts with UTC and Cadek faculty members, solo piano recitals, and numerous appearances throughout the area as a solo jazz pianist.  He has performed at many events, including the United States Governors Conference and an event for former President Gerald Ford. Most noted are his local and regional appearances with the David Walters Trio, which includes bass player, Gordy Nichol, and drummer, Jo Whitaker. Included in the jazz trio's many performances are three appearances at Chattanooga's prestigious Riverbend Festival, for which the group received rave notices. They are scheduled to appear, along with Chattanooga vocalist, Kathy Tugman, this year’s upcoming Riverbend Festival.
