   In the next couple of decades, the area’s senior population will increase dramatically. By 2030, the region’s population over the age of 65 will increase from approximately 127,000 to 202,000, and more doctors and nurses are needed who are trained in geriatric care. At the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, the UTC School of Nursing and other departments are providing opportunities for students to learn about gerontology. As news spread of Pat Summitt passing away yesterday, Chattanooga athletes and coaches paused to remember her. Though the legendary Lady Vols coach was located on the Knoxville campus, she visited the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga often. In this segment, we speak with UTC coaches and others, including David Blackburn, the UTC Vice Chancellor & Director of Athletics, who explains how Summitt impacted his life.

  Chattanooga native Dennis Haskins may be American's best-loved principal. Or, more specifically, Haskins's portrayal of Mr. Belding may be. Haskins played the character for more than a decade on Saved By The Bell and its spin-offs.

  UTC's Elder Scholars is a group of people 55 and older who meet on the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga campus once a month to learn about almost anything. Richard Winham talked to Jane Elmore, the co-chairperson fro the group, who told him that the older she gets, the better it gets.

  Kenyon Wilson, an Associate Professor at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, has composed a musical tribute to the four Marines and one sailor who were killed during a July 16, 2015 shooting rampage at a Chattanooga naval reserve center.  Titled Five, it made its Chattanooga premiere on February 20th, 2016 during a performance by high school students playing in the 2016 Tri-State Honor Band.

  Actor (and Chattanooga native) Dennis Haskins is so synonymous with Richard Belding, the Bayside High School principal he played on Saved By The Bell, that he uses @mrbelding as his Twitter handle.

However, in spite of his signature role as an educator, he never finished college.  In this story, he tells us why, at age 65, he finally returned to the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga to finish his degree. 

When the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga celebrates its 246th commencement ceremony on December 12, conference championship athletes, a commissioned military officer, and an internationally recognized actor will be among the 800 graduates.

UT Chattanooga will graduate candidates for bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees on Saturday, December 12, at 9 a.m., in the UTC McKenzie Arena.

Famous for portraying Principal Belding on the widely popular television program “Saved by the Bell,” Dennis Haskins will receive a degree in theatre.

  Renowned composer Daniel Asia is coming to Chattanooga for a series of free performances and lectures in early November.  In this interview, we discuss the ways Judaism inspires and informs his compositions, his use of Paul Pines poems as lyrics, and a Huffington post article he wrote that caused a stir in the classical music world.

Sword and Pen is a creative writing group at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga that offers military veterans and their dependents a chance to get together and write. 

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga is a microcosm of Chattanooga. A community with a bigger population than Collegedale and twice the number of people in Van Buren County, UTC is a small town within the city. As director of the Office for Emergency Management at UTC, it’s Tim Pridemore’s job to anticipate problems. Right now the campus is quiet. Most of the students are on Summer break. But for Tim Pridemore and his staff, this is one of the busiest times of the year.

Robert Fisher, a senior in the Brock Scholars program at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, is only the third student from UTC to be awarded a Rhodes Scholarship. Widely regarded as the most prestigious scholarship in the world, the Rhodes Scholarship was established with a bequest from Cecil Rhodes to “promote civic-minded leadership among young people with the moral force of character and instincts to lead.”

In this segment, we have an interview with Fisher, one of only 32 students from across the US to be awarded the scholarship this year.

From press conferences at the White House to long flights on Air Force One during campaign season to sleeping in a tent in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, Lothian has done it all and reported about it to day after day to an audience of millions.

“It was a grind, but it was exhilarating. I had to pinch myself when I walked through the gate of the White House with my own press pass for the first time,” he said.
